Book Description

After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they hear that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown’s new hockey coach.

Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you’ll ever see; Benji, the intense lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker. But bringing this team together proves to be a challenge as old bonds are broken, new ones are formed, and the enmity with Hed grows more and more acute.

As the big match approaches, the not-so-innocent pranks and incidents between the communities pile up and their mutual contempt grows deeper. By the time the last game is finally played, a resident of Beartown will be dead, and the people of both towns will be forced to wonder if, after all they’ve been through, the game they love can ever return to something simple and innocent.

My Review

Us Against You is the sequel to Fredrik Backman's brilliant novel Beartown (Bjornstad). I did not know why Backman would try to add more to the Beartown story but now I do. He is such an illuminating story teller and these characters were just too good to retire.

Us Against You is a heartwarming yet practical story. It is a story about people...everyday people...and the challenges and the joys that shape their lives. I cried so many times. Not because I was sad but because the people were so thoughtful...so caring...so real. Most people just try to honestly get through life. And most people have hidden secrets and hidden strengths. Backman cleverly brings the good and the bad in people to life. In a way that few authors can. He is that good.

Us Against You brings the reader back to the town that was divided by the rape of a young girl. The town is still divided. But perhaps not as divided as one would assume. Backman's brilliant storytelling tells tales of people just trying to get by. Us Against You is another hockey tale but hockey is just a vehicle to help provide the ties that bind this small community together. I imagine it is similar is Southern US towns where high school football rules the social aspects of the town. And brings it together.

Fredrik  Backman has once again told a tale that will have you laughing and crying. You won't want to leave Beartown behind. I am now bereft that Us Against You is finished.

Highest recommendation possible for Us Against You. If you have not read Fredrik Backman yet then you must. Read all of his books. Start with A Man Called Ove.
