California Road Trip: June 13, 2011

Mileage Traveled:  543 km

Susanville, California to Mammoth Lakes, California

We enjoyed a great breakfast at the hotel restaurant before setting out for the day.  We headed west on the 36 then south on the 89 past Lake Almanor.

The 89 is a gorgeous motorcycle road.  The town of Quincy is always adorable.  We made it to Lake Tahoe just in time for lunch.  There was still quite a bit of snow hanging around Lake Tahoe.  We had lunch on the deck at Gar Woods in Carnelian Bay.

We continued on the 89 south of Lake Tahoe through several mountain passes.  It was absolutely beautiful.  The 89 in California has to be one of the best rides ever.  Up and down, twist and turn, just amazing.  At the end of the day we rode the 395 to Mammoth Lakes which is a famous ski resort town.

This is Mono Lake which is a large shallow saline lake on the 395 just before Mammoth.   It is filled with tufa towers which have quite a spooky appearance.

In Mammoth Lakes we checked into the Best Western and asked where a good steakhouse was.  The clerk at the hotel recommended The Mogul.  It was by far the best meal of the trip.  What amazing steaks!
