California Road Trip: June 12, 2011

Mileage Traveled:  506 km

Bend, Oregon to Susanville, California

Before we left Bend we toured around the town.  First we headed to the historic downtown district which has undergone revitalization.  Then we headed to the Old Mill area which is an amazing collection of shops, restaurants, a hotel and homes.  I could spend a few days there.  I would require a car with a large trunk though!

We had lunch in Klamath Falls at a Denny’s that has never been renovated.   It was right out of my childhood.  It looked the same as all the Denny’s we had eaten at along the I-5 as well as the one in Blaine which was the best part of visiting our oceanfront property in Birch Bay.  And the burger was amazing.  Huge, juicy, wonderful.

As we got closer to Susanville I was dreading spending the night in the very lacklustre Best Western there.  Instead, we decided to try the Diamond Mountain Casino.  Great decision!!!  Awesome hotel for a more than reasonable price.  Decent restaurant.  From now on I’ll be excited about the Susanville stop!  There just is nothing between Klamath Falls and Susanville and nothing between Susanville and Truckee.
